"Lonesome Whistle: A Tribute to
the Great Hank Williams"
captures Al's unique style and
approach to many of Williams’
best-known songs and a few
lesser heard gems. Of course,
there have been many tributes to
Hank over the years, so one
might ask what is unique about
this one? For me, it's the
distinctive sound and style of the
recordings. As I listen, I am
reminded of that 1950s original
country sound, but with today's
technology. The fidelity is superb.
Accardi puts just a bit of reverb on
Al's vocals giving it that
Rockabilly touch. But even with
that, Al at many times sounds as
if he is channeling Hank’s voice
through himself. It's actually really
wild! What is evident throughout
the album is Al's reverence
toward Hank Williams. He
certainly does justice to each of
the songs and brings out the
emotion in the song from how it
was originally written and
intended to be felt.
The album boasts an ambitious 14 tracks and includes Hank signature songs such as "Cold Cold Heart,” "Hey
Good Lookin',” and "Your Cheatin' Heart,” plus, some tunes that are not as familiar but equally compelling, "I
Won't Be Home No More" and "I've Been A Fool About You.” My personal favorite on the CD is "I'll Never Get
Out Of This World Alive.” When Al first told me that he was going to record this project, I immediately thought of
this song and could hear Al singing it in my mind. He took my suggestion and the result was everything I knew
it would be!
This project is very authentic in many ways largely due to the fact
that Al was around when these songs were originally recorded and
heard them when they were new. With this tribute CD, Al makes
all these songs seem new and relevant even in today's world,
proving that great music has no expiration date.
Al reflects on a special memory about his favorite Hank Williams
song "Lonesome Whistle": "When I was 17 years old in 1952, I
entered a talent contest in Midland, Texas. I sang 'Lonesome
Whistle' and won fifty dollars. I gave my mom the money and she
cried. What a blessing that was."
