He stood frozen in place as the smell of smoke
drifted into his nose. He watched as all of the forest’s
animals left their homes and ran north.
Mahìngan’s ears could pick up on his family's howls
which seemed to be fading from when he first smelled
the smoke, but he couldn’t see them anymore. The
smoke was beginning to cloud his sight and the other
animals were still going by in a blur.
