Friedman likes the Casper area because it’s suited for
high adventure with stunning views and swift access via the
gondola—ideal for introductory-level guided tours. The con-
densed nature of Casper Bowl’s varied terrain, linked to a pre-
existing trail system from the gondola to Ranger Overlook,
provides quick access to a range of via ferrata climbs.
“It appeals to groups, families, and individuals look-
ing for a workout to scramble up and down,” Freidman said.
“They can do via ferrata for two to three hours, go up the
practice route, then up Ranger Ridge and cross the bridge,
take some pictures, and then walk down to the restaurant
and have a delicious meal.”
Friedman also notes there are numerous variations and
adjacent climbs nearby available for future expansion, all
on signature Teton gneiss rock, a coarse-grained metamor-
phic structure consisting of feldspar, mica and quartz. “This
is the same rock climbers grip when they head into many of
the higher Teton peaks,” said Friedman.
What will set Jackson’s via ferrata apart? “It’s not con-
trived,” said Friedman. “With zip lines and coasters you’re
not in control.” Conversely, via ferrata is not designed as a
risk-free experience. Guests will have more responsibility.
“It’ll be an eyes-wide-open, supervised accomplishment,” he
added. “That’s the difference. It’s a worthwhile experience.”

According the Adventure Partners proposal, all via fer-
rata climbs at Jackson Hole will be open to guided parties only,
with ratios of no less than one guide to four guests. Multiple
signs will be posted at their bases indicating the restriction
of unguided participants. Since access to via ferratas is visible
from the Bridger gondola, JHMR can monitor unauthorized
use. And, because safety is paramount, “Jackson will meet or
exceed the standards for the UIAA international climbing and
mountaineering standards for via ferrata,” said Friedman.
As for the skill level required, most anyone can use a via
ferrata, he said. Guides will help guests get outfitted in har-
nesses, helmets, and appropriate footwear and then lead
them through the practice area to determine their skill and
comfort levels before they attempt the ferrata itself. “Just
because someone tells you they’ve done all these via ferrata
routes doesn’t make them trustworthy. Participation will be
based on practice area performance,” Friedman said.
If all goes according to plan, Corbet’s Couloir will be
ground zero for phase two of Jackson’s via ferrata program.
Winding routes will climb the towering limestone cliffs above
the talus slopes of Tensleep Bowl. With hundreds of feet of air
space above and below, the steep, sustained routes surround-
ing Jackson’s famous ski run test piece will deliver full value
to gutsy guests who accept new challenges. No specific com-
pletion dates exist yet, as Jackson Hole wants to feel secure in
guiding guests before installing what will be an extreme ferrata.
“A via ferrata is something different, and aligned with
our desire to bring people into the mountains where they
can experience nature and raw adventure under their own
power,” Kemmerer said.
