• Encourage keeping a simple diary of meals/triggers/symptoms to identify patterns and
help future consultation.
• Advise when to return/seek medical attention: if symptoms persist despite treatment,
worsen, if you have red-flags (see referral list).
• Provide realistic expectations: “It may take several weeks of consistent lifestyle +
medication for symptoms to improve; some people will need ongoing management or
investigation”.
• Check for other medications: “Are you taking pain-killers regularly? Some may irritate your
stomach — we may need to review with your doctor.”
• Encourage non-medication comfort strategies: e.g., avoid tight clothing around abdomen,
relax after meals, take portion control, elevate bed head if night symptoms.
• Reassure: “Many people with dyspepsia can manage their symptoms with lifestyle/OTC
therapy, but we always monitor for signs when medical input is needed.”
• For repeated purchase of OTC medications: schedule a review: “If you find yourself buying
antacids or PPIs many times over the next few weeks, come see me or your doctor — we may
need further evaluation”.
