5- Propionates

• Oxidation of fatty acids with an odd number of carbon
   atoms and the oxidation of some amino acids generates as
   the terminal oxidation product, propionyl-CoA. Propionyl-
   CoA is converted to the TCA intermediate, succinyl-CoA.

• This conversion is carried out by the ATP-requiring
   enzyme, propionyl-CoA carboxylase then methylmalonyl-
   CoA epimerase and finally the vitamin B12 requiring
   enzyme, methylmalonyl-CoA mutase.
