2. Black cohosh
• Botanical origin: It consists of the dried rhizomes and roots of Cimicifuga
racemosa (L.)
Constituents:
1-Terpenoids: cycloartanol-based triterpenes actein (aglycone: acetylacteol),
cimicifugoside (also known as cimigoside; aglycone: cimigenol),
2- Alkaloids: Quinolizidine–type.
3- Tannins: Tannic and gallic acid.
Uses supported by clinical data
Treatment of postmenopausal symptoms such as hot flushes, profuse sweating,
sleeping disorders and nervous irritability.
Safety precautions:
Owing to its potential estrogenic effects ,it SHOULD NOT be used during
pregnancy or lactation.
