Subterranean stems containing alkaloids
Hydrastis
(Golden seal, yellow root)
Botanical origin: It is the dried rhizomes & roots of Hydrastis canadensis L.
(Ranunculaceae)
=> was formerly classified as member of family Berberidaceae.
Constituents:
Alkaloids, mainly hydrastine, berberine and canadine.
Uses described in pharmacopoeias and well-established documents
• Treatment of digestive complaints, such as dyspepsia, gastritis, feeling of
distension and flatulence.
Uses described in traditional medicine
• Treatment of uterine haemorrhage and vaginitis.
Precautions and Contra-indications:
The use of golden seal as a douche should be avoided because of the potential
ulcerative side– effects.
