Plasters

What are plasters?
    ▪ Plasters are solid or semisolid adhesive masses intended for external application, made of
         such materials and consistency as to adhere to the skin and thereby attach as dressing
         (different from a bandage)
    ▪ The adhesive material is a rubber base or a synthetic resin
    ▪ Plasters are applied to the skin to provide:
    ❖ close contact and prolonged contact at the site
    ❖ Mechanical support and protection
    ❖ Have an occlusive and macerating action
    ▪ Examples of medicated plasters,
             − corn plasters (10 to 40% salicylic acid)
             − Back plasters (oleoresin of capsicum)

Dressings

What are dressings?
    ▪ Dressings are external application resembling ointments in consistency, but remaining
         semisolid at body temperature
    ▪ They are sterile pads to help promote healing and prevent further harm
    ▪ Classes Of Dressings include, primary wound dressing (wet dressing), Absorbents (surgical
         cotton and gauze), and Bandages .
    ▪ Examples of Dressings
             1. Paraffin dressing, NF - soft, analgesic, covering surface denuded by burns.
             2. Petrolatum Gauze, USP - is absorbent gauze saturated with white petrolatum.
