II) Minimum fill:
    ▪ The USP's minimum fill test is determination of the net weight or volume of the contents of
filled containers to ensure proper contents compared with the labeled amount

(III) Additional Standards:
    ▪ Examine the viscosity
    ▪ In-Vitro drug release to ensure within lot and lot-to-lot uniformity

Creams

What are creams?
    ▪ They are multi phase semisolid preparations (emulsion system) containing lipophilic fatty
         phase, aqueous phase and surfactant

Types of creams:
    • Hydrophilic creams (O/W type)
    • Hydrophobic creams (W/O type)

• Creams find primary application in topical skin products and in products used rectally and
 vaginally

• Many patients and physicians prefer creams to ointments because they are easier to spread and
 remove

• According to the type of SAA and phase ratio, two types of emulsion base are present,
        1. W/O emulsion base
        2. O/W emulsion base

1. W/O emulsion base:
             ▪ emollient, occlusive, good spreading, greasy and cooling effect.
             ▪ Suitable for cosmetic preparation.
             ▪ e.g. cold cream

2. O/W emulsion base:
             ▪ washable, weak occlusion, good spreading, non greasy, cooling effect and good drug
                  release.
                                                                                                                    26
