Electron transport chain and oxidative phosphorylation
The electron transport chain involves a series of redox
reactions that relies on protein complexes to transfer electrons from
a NADH & FADH2 to an acceptor molecule (oxygen). As electrons
move down the chain, energy is released and used to pump protons
out of the matrix, forming a proton gradient activating ATP
synthesis. The complexes are embedded in the inner mitochondrial
membrane folds called the cristae
The components of the electron transport chain are four
protein complexes imbedded in inner mitochondrial membrane. In
addition to mobile electron carriers & ATP synthase (Figure 30).
