Bronchoconstriction associated with using MDI

     qBronchospasm may be due to:

          • The propellants in the MDI(CFC)
          • Benzalkonium chloride preservative

     qThe patient may be advised to

          • Switch to dry powder inhalers
          • Switch to a hydrofluoroalkane metered-dose inhaler.
          • Use a spacer

     Powdered and MDI aerosols

     qDry powder inhalers (DPIs) have several advantages over
       MDIs
        • Breath-activated (do not need co-ordination )
        • It has no propellant

                             BUT

     • people suffering acute attacks may be unable to produce enough
       airflow to use dry-powder inhalers successfully.
