astringent, antitussive and sedative properoties. Applied in whooping
cough, bronchitis, nervous digestive disorders and diarrhea.

Dosage forms: syrups, tinctures and commercial compounded

preparations.

                   Witch-Hazel Bark

                          (Hamamelis)

Botanical origin : It is the dried bark of Hamamelis virginiana

family Hamamelidaceae.

Constituents :

   • Tannins (not less than 3%. And up to 10%): both hydrolysable and
       condensed tannins are present. They are a mixture of gallic acid,
       hydrolysable hamamelitannin and condensed proanthocyanidins.

   • Other constituents: Fixed oil (about 0.6%), resin (hamamelin,
       hamamamelitannin), wax, saponins, choline, free gallic acid.

Medicinal uses

Uses supported by clinical data
Topically for minor skin lesions, bruises and sprains, local inflammation
of the skin and mucous membranes, haemorrhoids and varicose veins.
Uses described in pharmacopoeias and in traditional systems of
medicine
Topically as a haemostat.
