Constituents:
• Alkaloids: Indole–type: canthinone, β-carboline.
• Terpenoids (quassinoids): Isoquassin (picrasmin), quassin 0.2%.
• Coumarins: Scopoletin.
• Other constituents: β-Sitosterol, β-sitostenone; thiamine 1.8% (in
P. excelsa).
Medicinal uses
• Quassia is stated to possess bitter, sialogogue, gastric stimulant and
anthelmintic properties.
