N.B. α- guaiaconic acids is colorless, readily converted by oxidizing
agents into a deep blue substance termed guaiac-blue.
Test for Identity:
Tincture of guaiacum wood gives a deep blue color (guaiac-blue) on the
addition of oxidizing agent such as ferric chloride.
Uses:
• Guaiacum has a local stimulant action which is sometimes useful
in sore throat. The resin is used in chronic tonsillitis, pharyngitis,
gout and rheumatism, as anti inflammatory agent.
• Tincture of guaiacum is used with ozonic ether as a test for blood.
Dosage forms: drops, ointments and commercial compounded
preparations.
Average daily dose: 4-5 g of the drug.
