Introduction-Terminology
Medicinal Plants:
❑ Plant materials which are used throughout developed and developing countries
as home remedies, over-the-counter drug products and raw materials for
the pharmaceutical industry. Medicinal plants are distributed worldwide, but
they are most abundant in tropical countries.
❑ Medicinal plants represent a substantial proportion of the global drug market. It
is estimated that about 25% of all modern medicines are directly or indirectly
derived from higher plants.
