➢In mammals, mevalonic acid is a key isopentenylpyrophosphate (IPP)
intermediate in the biosynthesis of dimethylallylpyrophosphate (DMAPP)
thousands of compounds. It is one of
the direct sources of the C5 unit, as
either:

• isopentenylpyrophosphate (IPP) or
• dimethylallylpyrophosphate

(DMAPP).
➢The mevalonate PW is also known by

the name of the key enzyme HMG-
CoA reductase.
