☻Nomenclature
• Historically, it has been confusing, some were named according to their
substrate or reaction type
• International union of Biochemistry made a systemic name for each
enzyme which indicates:
– The substrate acted upon
– The coenzyme involved in the reaction
– The type of reaction analyzed
– E.g. Lactate-NAD+-oxidoreductase enzyme
• Enzyme Comission Numerical Code (EC)
+
e.g. Alcohol-NAD -Dehydrogenase: E.C. 1.1.1.1
+ Classification of enzymes + H+
R-CH -OH + NAD ------------► R-CHO + NADH
2
E.C (1): Class of enzyme (oxidoreductase)
E.C. 1. (1): Functional group (CH-OH)
+
E.C. 1. 1. (1): Coenzyme (NAD )
E.C. 1. 1. 1. (1): Substrate (alcohol)
