5. Organoleptic additives

There are definite psychologic basis for drug therapy in which color, flavor and taste of
pharmaceutical product affect patient acceptability, particularly for oral liquid dosage forms.

This psychological base is highly considered in case of pediatric and geriatric patients.

Organoleptic properties can be enhanced by addition of flavoring and coloring (organoleptic
additives)

5. Flavoring and sweetening agents

The majority of drugs in solution are unpalatable and thus flavors are added to mask their
unpleasant taste.

There are four basic taste sensations which are salty, sweet, bitter and sour and different flavors
are used to mask them.

                   Taste   Masking Flavors
                   Salty   Apricot, peach and vanilla
                   Bitter  Cherry, mint and anise
                   Sour    Raspberry and citrus flavors
                   Sweet   Vanilla and fruit

Usually, a combination of flavors is used to achieve the optimal taste-masking property.
Flavouring agent should be soluble, stable, inert and compatible with preparation.

   Certain flavors appeal to certain patient populations; this must be borne in mind by the
   formulator. For example, fruit and bubble gum flavors are acceptable to children, whilst
