Physical Properties

• Alkenes have physical properties similar to those of
 corresponding alkanes.

• Alkenes up to four carbons are gases at room
 temperature.

• Being relatively nonpolar themselves, alkenes
dissolve in nonpolar solvents or in solvents of low
 polarity.

• Alkenes are very slightly soluble in water .

   IUPAC Nomenclature of Alkenes

• 1. Identify the parent alkane, change –ane to -ene. 2.
Identify the substituents. 3. Assign a number to each
substituent. 4. Arrange the substituents alphabetically

• Note: The alkene corresponding to the longest continuous
chain that includes the double bond is considered the
parent, and the chain is numbered in the direction that
gives the doubly bonded carbons their lower number.
