Ophthalmic ointments:
Liquid paraffin (mineral oil) and white petroleum (Vaseline) are used as vehicle for ophthalmic
ointments.
Ointments are generally used for night therapy while eye drops are used for day therapy.
Disadvantage: Greasy, cause blurred vision.
Quality control tests for ophthalmic
products
Sterility Test
Ophthalmic products should be free from aerobic and anaerobic bacteria and fungi
Leakage test
This test is mandatory for ophthalmic ointments
It evaluates the intactness of the ointment tube and its seal
Metal particles
Only done on ophthalmic ointments
Metal particles could cause irritation of the cornea or conjunctiva
