Mainly they are sterile aqueous solutions in water.
Oily solution is rare.
Solvents include:
Water for injection.
Fixed vegetable oil and mineral oil.
NOTE: Co-solvents are not used (very irritant)
2. Suspension Eye drops:
Mainly aqueous preparations in water while, Oily suspensions are very rare.
Suspended particles must be less than 10 µm to avoid reflex tearing (drainage) and to minimize
eye irritation.
Shake well before use: to ensure uniform dose administration and redisperse any precipitated or
aggregated particles.
3. Emulsion Eye drops:
Mostly they are o/w emulsions (micro-emulsion) prepared with well-tolerated oils (sesame oil,
castor oil, soya oil) and emulsifier (phospholipids, span 80, Cremophor RH).
Example: diflustero emulsion drops (corticosteroids) used as anti-inflammatory.
Characteristics & Components
Sterility:
Most important requirement is sterility.
Microbial contaminated eye drops can cause serious problems and even loss of eye vision (most
common organism is Pseudomonas Aeruginosa).
Preservatives:
Multidose drops should contain preservative.
Preservatives cannot also be used for chronic diseases (glaucoma & dry eyes)
WHAT about addition of preservative to single dose products and intraocular injection!? 63/77
