Patients with gallstones should not use Menthae piperitae leaf unless under medical supervision.
Purity tests:
Foreign organic matter
Not more than 5% stems, the diameter of which must be not more than 1.5 mm; not more than
8% leaves showing brown stains due to Puccinia menthae; not more than 2% other foreign
matter.

Thyme consists of the whole leaves and flowers separated of Thymus vulgaris L. or Thymus zygis
L. or a mixture of both species, Family Labiatae (Lamiaceae).
Microscopic Characters:
The transverse section of the stem shows hairy epidermis with diacytic stomata , non-glandular
trichomes being short, unicellular, short conical and as pointed teeth, and 2-3-celled, uniseriate,
sharply pointed with warty walls elbow-shaped (bent or geniculate). Glandular trichomes are
numerous (labiaceous).
