c- Endocarp, is composed of narrow tangentially elongated thin -walled cells except
when adjacent to porous cells where it consists of porous lignified thickened cells.

II- Seed:

a- Seed-coat is formed of a single layer of polygonal brown cells with collapsed layer
underneath.

b- Endosperm is formed of thick-walled cellulosic cells containing fixed oil and
aleurone grains, and micro-rosette crystals of ca ox.

III- Carpophore, splits passing at the apex into the raphe of each mericarp and is traversed
by a vascular strand of fibers and spiral vessels.

Powdered plant material:

It is grey, greenish-brown or yellowish-brown in colour with characteristic sweet
agreeable and aromatic odour and taste.

Powdered anise characterized by the presence of:

1 - Numerous unicellular non-glandular (25-100 um long and 10-15 um wide), conical
curved hairs with thick walls, bluntly pointed apices and finely warty cuticle.
2- Fragments of mesocarp with yellowish -brown comparatively narrow branching vittae,

usually crossed by cells of the endocarp.
3- Numerous colourless fragments of endosperm cells with thick cellulosic walls and

containing fixed oil globules and aleurone grains (12-15 um) containing micro-rosette
crystals of calcium oxalate (2-10 um in diameter).
4- Lignified porous cells.
5- Fragments of epicarp formed of polygonal cells with striated cuticle and anomocytic
stomata in addition to few vascular structures.

General identity tests:

1- Macroscopic and microscopic examinations.

2- Thin-layer chromatography for the presence of anethole.
