2- Calumba root ‫جذر الكاومب ة‬

Calumba is the dried transversely or obliquely sliced roots of Jateorrhjza
palmate, Family Menispermaceae.

Powdered drug:

Constituents:
   • Calumba contains 2-3 % of isoquinoline alkaloids:
       Palmatine, Jaterorrhizine and calumbamine.
   • It also contains the non –alkaloidal bitter principles: calumbin.

Uses:
Bitter tonic and stomachic. It contains no tannins. so, it could be prescribed
with iron salts. it is specially indicated for anorexia and flatulent dyspepsia.
Now mainly used in Veterinary medicine.
N.B. All alkaloids of Calumba are centrally respiratory depressants.

                  II. Roots containing Indole alkaloids
                          Rauwolfia ‫جذر الراولفيا‬

Rauwolfia consists of the dried roots and rhizomes of Rauwolfia
serpentine, family Apocynaceae.
A small tree or shrub found in Pakistan and India
