UV-visible Spectrophotometry

               Spectroscopic methods of analysis

            • Spectroscopy is the science dealing with the interactions of
                radiation and matter.

            • Measurements based on light and other forms of electromagnetic
radiation are widely used throughout analytical chemistry.

            • Spectroscopic analytical methods are based on measuring the
amount of radiation absorbed or produced by the analyte.

            • This course deals with 2 types of spectroscopic methods of analysis:
                1- Molecular absorption spectroscopy
                2- Molecular emission (fluorescence) spectroscopy

                                                                                                                  3

                    Electromagnetic Radiation

             • Electromagnetic radiation is a form of energy that consists of
perpendicular oscillating electric and magnetic fields that
propagate through space along a linear path and with constant
                  velocity (3 x 108 m/sec).

             • We call electromagnetic radiation in the UV/visible and sometimes
                  in the IR region, light.
