                            Shaheed Jarnail Singh Bhinderanwale

respect. If you or your parents find any mistakes in this essay, please know that they

Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale was born in the village of Rode

(rofy), in Punjab. He was the youngest of seven brothers.

                                                                                                    th
He took Amrit when he was only five years. He completed 5 grade
in a primary school. He started helping his family in farming. He met

Gurbachan Singh Bhindranwale of Damdami Taksal in 1964. Jarnail

Singh Ji went to study at Damdami Taksal and stayed there for one
year. Jarnail Singh Ji was chosen to be the next leader of the

Damdami Taksaal on August 25, 1977. He was only thirty years old.

He saw the condition of young Sikhs of Punjab was bad. They

indulged in actions prohibited in Sikhism like cutting hair, drinking
alcohol, smoking tobacco, taking drugs, and other addictions which

would affect them mentally and physically. He went from village to
village talking to them. He believed that his mission was to

administer Amrit, to explain the meanings of Gurbani and to teach

Gurbani to those around him. He told people that a Hindu should be a
firm Hindu, a Muslim should be a firm Muslim, and a Sikh should be a

firm Sikh. He convinced young Sikhs: “Nashey chhaddo, Amrit
chhako, Gursikh bano.” Masses followed his advice.

Sant Bhindranwale wanted to improve the political environment in

Punjab. In the summer of August 1982, Bhindranwale and the Akali

Dal launched the Dharam Yudh Morcha. There were many demands
based on the Anandpur Sahib Resolution of 1973. They wanted tax

reform for the farmers. They wanted more irrigation water from
the rivers Ravi and Beas. They wanted the return of Chandigarh to

Punjab. Chandigarh used to be a part of Punjab, but was later made a
