Lesson 6: Sacha Sauda-The True Trade
Nanak Ji continued to be detached from the worldly life. Father Kaliyan Das Ji
wanted his son to be like other boys. He thought of teaching him to trade.
One day Father Kaliyan Das Ji
gave Nanak Ji twenty rupees
and told him, “Son, go buy
some things and sell them at a
profit. Do a profitable trade.”
He also sent Bala Ji, a friend
of Nanak Ji with him.
Nanak Ji and Bala Ji walked
for about 12 miles and reached
the village cUhVkwxw.
There under trees, they saw a big group of Hindu sadhus. Nanak Ji went to them
and started talking. The Sadhu leader sMq ryn told him that they were hungry and
hadn’t eaten in several days. Nanak Ji felt the urge to help them. “Balay, let’s
give these twenty rupees to these sadhus.”
“But Nanak Ji, Father had given this money to you to do a profitable trade and
increase this money before we go home.” Bala Ji begged him worriedly.
“But Balay, the trade of money is not a true profitable trade. Helping the needy
is! Come. Don’t worry. Listen to me.” Nanak Ji tried to convince Bala Ji.
Bala Ji was worried about the anger of Father Kaliyan Das Ji. But what could he
say to Nanak Ji? He became quiet. Nanak Ji offered twenty rupees to the
sadhus. Saint Rain (sMq ryn) told Nanak Ji that they had no use for money, but
they were hungry for many days. Nanak Ji went to the neighboring village and
bought some flour, daal, and some rice; and he bought a pot to cook the meal.
Saint Rain (sMq ryn) told Nanak Ji to leave all the supplies and go home. Nanak Ji
did as told. After Nanak Ji left, other saints asked Saint Rain why he did not
make Nanak cook for them. He replied, “That boy had a divine light around him.
He seemed to be God Himself. His divine light was too much for me to have him
do seva for us.” (There are many versions of this Sakhi. Some Sakhis say that
Guru Ji cooked food and served it to the Sadhus. I heard this one and loved it.)
