What do I learn from The Mool Mantar
Dr. Gurinder Pal Singh
Guru Nanak Sahib is the greatest teacher or enlightener ever born. He made us
aware of our unity with the whole universe/cosmos created by Waheguru, the
Almighty. He created a new symbol ੴ to represent Waheguru; its Eternity, Infinite
Energy and Extant. Waheguru is also known by various other names like Har, Hari,
Ram, and Allah in Gurbani. He shared with us the excellences of Waheguru through
Mool Mantar, the opening stanza of his composition Japu Ji Sahib.
Elsewhere in Gurbani, the Guru Sahibaan have counselled us to realize our Unity
with Waheguru. Guru Amardas Ji wrote
mn qUM joiq srUpu hY Awpxw mUlu pCwxu ]
mn hir jI qyrY nwil hY gurmqI rMgu mwxu ]
In this short essay we shall see how we can transform our lives by trying to
imbibe the excellences of Waheguru in our daily lives. The Mool Mantar as it
appears in beginning of Sri Guru Granth Sahib, reads as follows,
ੰ
This is often translated as follows
ੴ: There Is Only One God
ਸਤਿਨਾਮੁ: The Ultimate Truth
ਕਰਿਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ: The Creator of All
ਤਨਰਭਉ: Without Fear
ਤਨਰਵੈਰੁ: Without Enmity
ਅਕਾਲ-ਮੂਰਤਿ: Timeless
ਅਜੂਨੀ: Beyond Birth and Death
ਸੈਭ: Self-Enlightened
ੰ
ਗੁਰਪਰਸਾਤਿ: Obtained By His/Her Own Grace
