The tourism industry is global. It is big business

               and  will  continue  to  grow.  Meeting  this  growth

               with      well-planned,       environmentally         sound

               development is a challenge for planning all over

               the  world,  whether  it  is  Indonesia,  Nepal,  the


               United  States,  Australia,  Thailand,  or  France.
               The goal of this chapter and the book is to raise


               issues,  provide  frameworks,  and  generate  your
               thoughtful  consideration  of  the  issues  and


               changes facing this complex fi eld as it operates
               in an increasingly technological and global age.



               WHAT IS TOURISM?


               Tourism is commonly referred to as “the activity

               of visiting places for pleasure”. The basic concept

               of tourism is based on the movement of people

               outside  their  own  place  of  residence  i.e.  home

               area.  Therefore,  tourism  can  be  considered  as

               the  movement  of  people  within  a  city,  state,

               country or across international boundary.



               All of us at one point of time or other have taken
               part in some tourism activity; whether it is a visit


               to our grandparents staying at a nearby city or a
