 All are sweet tasting (but the relative sweetness varies)

 Water Soluble (because of the numerous OH groups

that readily engage in hydrogen bonding with water.)

 Insoluble in organic solvents

Pentose ; Xylose, Ribose

Hexoses ; Glucose, Fructose, Galactose

Sugar alcohol ; Sorbitol, Manitol, Xylitol

Sugar acid ; Uronic acid (d-glucuronic acid, d-

galacturonic acid, l-iduronic acid and d-mannuronic acid).

Deoxy sugars ; Deoxyribose, rhamnose,

Deoxyribose
