Intellectual Property Laws
• Three kinds of property:
• Real Property: land or buildings
attached to it.
• Personal property:
• Tangible personal property:
that which can be touched,
moved, etc.
• Intangible personal property:
cannot be touched, such as the
value of a shared partnership.
• Intellectual property: property that
comes from a work of art (“art” is the
product of a mind).
• Patent = protects against others from
practicing the invention covered. Protects
idea. Different from country to country
(such as durations, starting points, what can
or cannot be patented, etc.).
• Trademark™= word, name, symbol, color,
sound, product, shape, device to identify
goods.
• Copyright© = expression of ideas – original
works of authorship.
• Trade secrets = confidential business info
that is protected when the owner takes
security precautions.
