ENERGY USAGE
® WHOLE-HOUSE AND
SPOT VENTILATION FANS
(for Cooling)
ANY OF US have memories of living in older
homes with powerful whole-house fans
that pulled air through the entire house and
blasted it out through some roaring fan unit.
M The concept was sound, but the technology
was loud and energy inecient.
Modern whole-house fans have solved the noise and
energy use issue and are becoming popular again,
particularly in climates where hot weather is seasonal,
not year round. This time around, whole-house fan
technology has a leg up: Wi-Fi controls. This means that
instead of being instruments of brute-force ventilation,
the fans can respond to conditions as they arise.
Another good option is to install several quiet “spot ventilation” units, such as
the Energy Star-certified WhisperSense line from Panasonic. These self-contained
ventilation units offer various levels of automation. You can set them to operate when
they detect a certain level of heat, moisture or airborne particles.
Smarter Whole-House
Fan Controls
Smartphone-enabled apps offer nuanced control over mechanical
ventilation, such as smart fans. This is a brand new app category,
however, and there’s room for plenty more competitors. The smartphone
app and control hub unit shown has had mixed reviews. If paired with the
proper whole-house fan type, it appears to work well and maintain its
connection with the unit. Yet, some fans tend to lose the link frequently.
Read the reviews first.
Just right. The QuietCool smart controller for
whole-house fans allows you to optimize the fan
to operate when conditions are ideal.
