ENERGY USAGE
Energy Usage:
Heating and Cooling
HE KEY TO A GOOD “POWER DOWN” STRATEGY is to tackle the big
offenders first. And in a home, this one is almost always heating and
cooling, followed by water heating. Fortunately, the biggest areas of
energy use are also where great gains have been made, both in terms
T of passive building performance and active mechanical systems. More
than half of all home energy use derives from conditioning the spaces and
providing hot water. While other energy users such as lighting and appliances
should not be ignored, they can be addressed over time with a policy of always
upgrading to more ecient models/products when replacing a bulb or oven.
