001 The Indian workplace is rapidly changing. In the past, workers went to their
jobs to perform a task. Now, the workplace is changing into a place where workers both
work and learn, as companies transform themselves into learning organizations. As
learning organizations, companies provide ongoing work-related Learning Opportunities
and training to all levels of employees, offer a variety of information and resources,
encourage the exchange of ideas, and reward employees who acquire new skills.

002 Companies have to invest significant resources in order to provide
                  L e a r n i n g a n d training services to their employees. What motivates Organizations to
spend time and money on Learning, training and developing its employees? The answer lies
in understanding the new economy that is emerging in the India.

                  The New Economy

003 The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of India is estimated to grow at 5.5 per
cent in 2020-2021 from the low of 5 percent during 2019-2020. Industrial growth
performance in the next fiscal year is expected to improve to 4.5 per cent from the estimated
3.5 percent of the current fiscal year. In 2019-20 agriculture is estimated to grow at 2.8
                  percent. All sectors are e x p e c t e d t o contribute to the r e v i v a l of growth. More
importantly, the economy has shown remarkable resilience to both global and domestic
tremors. In many Public Sector organizations the old generation will be retiring and the
new human resource will be joining in many Indian Organizations.

004 In order to remain competitive in this rapidly changing environment, without
significantly cutting the jobs, Org anizations are rethinking how they do business as
a means to improve productivity and the quality of their products. It is imperative
therefore, to provide learning opportunities and train their employees to understand
the most effective ways to interact with customers and to be aware of the best practices
of the most successful organizations in the field. By doing this, Organizations are
attempting to increase productivity by rethinking processes.

How the New Economy Affects Employees?

005 The new economy has a profound effect on the Indian worker. In the new
economy, jobs can be performed more cheaply and efficiently through the use of
technology than through human labour. By relying on technology instead of human
beings, companies can increase their productivity and be more competitive, but instead of
this natural urge to a cut down the jobs, being a welfare state with an objective of all round
inclusive growth, companies optimize their option of cost of technology vs. cost of labour.

                                                                14
