DOMINO SUGAR REFINERY REDEVELOPMENT, NY
This 11 acre redevelopment project includes waterfront improvements, four new multi-story buildings, and the renovation of the landmark refinery. Pile foundations for the new buildings and an internal/external bracing system were needed to secure the historic refinery building.
Construction + Geotechnical Solutions Unearthed:
Recommended driven piles with an allowable compression capacity of 200 tons and caissons with allowable compression capacities greater than 200 tons.
Advised that the existing and any additional loads be supported with a mat foundation to preserve the refinery walls.
Designed internal and external bracing systems to preserve the walls during demolition. Advised micropiles to support this bracing system.
KEW GARDENS INTERCHANGE PROJECT, NY
This design-build project includes phased replacement of 15 bridges and reconstruction of several sections of roadway to enhance safety and improve traffic flow.
Construction + Geotechnical Solutions Unearthed:
Designed multiple cost effective SOE systems, including cantilevered and laterally supported soldier pile/lagging and sheet pile walls.
Installed internal bracing, when an unanticipated confined aquifer was discovered and made tieback drilling infeasible.

Mobilized quickly when changed conditions required new analyses and revised SOE drawings.

CONEY ISLAND DEVELOPMENT , NY
Part of NYC’s ongoing efforts to revitalize neighborhoods and provide affordable housing, this 88,500 SF new building is designed to be resilient for future storms, and will consist of two 16-story towers above a 7-story podium. The subsurface investigation uncovered complex subsurface conditions of two relatively deep soft clay strata.
Construction + Geotechnical Solutions Unearthed:
Evaluated several foundation types to determine feasibility and cost effectiveness.
Designed foundation for driven and drilled piles with allowable compression capacities of 130 and 100 tons, respectively. The piles were installed through the clay strata to the lowest sand layer to prevent load transfer to the clay that could result in unacceptable building settlements.
ROCKINGHAM BRIDGE REPLACEMENT, VT
VIEW FULL PROJECT DETAILS
This Design-Build project replaced the northbound and southbound bridges over the Williams River and the Green Mountain Railroad. As a critical bridge, it must remain open to all traffic after an earthquake, be usable by emergency vehicles and for security/defense purposes.
Construction + Geotechnical Solutions Unearthed:
Redesigned the southbound pile foundations, taking advantage of Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA) pile testing data, after driving piles through dense embankments for the northbound abutments.
Using the PDA data, the team was able to utilize a larger number of lower capacity piles to significantly reduce overall driving lengths, driving difficulty and number of splices.
Used geophysical seismic refraction and GPR measurements to obtain geological data on the river channel for scour analysis, saving time and money.
Performed a site-specific geotechnical seismic hazard evaluation including a ground motion study to develop a design response spectrum and liquefaction evaluation.
