CHAPTER 1 / FORGET JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING YOU WERE EVER TOLD ABOUT POSITIVE THINKINGNO B.S. Guide to Succeeding in Business by Breaking All the Rules 19In 2023, Tesla recalled 1.3 million defective automobiles. Musk had that, plus he bought Twitter for at least three times its worth in an admitted bad deal, and discovered more problems with its business than he had expected. He also had the first of his heaviest-ever rockets blow up. Is it all because Elon Musk is not a positive thinker? No. If you want to accuse him of any thought sin, it%u2019d be being too positive. But he is all about doing epic things for which a strong positive attitude is required, but without any illusions about that prohibiting misjudgments, mistakes, and calamities. Resilience is an application of positive thinking only needed in negative circumstances. #3: Only Noble, Positive Emotions Contribute to SuccessThis brings us back to the Pat Day story and the many, many stories just like it of people with chips on their shoulders and somethings to prove with their success. Tom Brady, labeled the GOAT%u2014for Greatest of All Time%u2014never forgot he had been an overlooked sixth-round draft choice, warming the bench, possibly never getting a chance to show what he could do as a starting quarterback if Drew Bledsoe hadn%u2019t been injured. (Note: Brady had to keep himself ready for an opportunity, never sure when or how it might come.) Similarly, Steph Curry, NBA superstar, had also been %u201cdissed%u201d by being a late-round draft choice, and the fact that a chip stayed on his shoulder about it even made it into a Subway ad, as a joke. The late Dean Martin, never known for his work ethic, admitted that he knuckled down and worked harder in the years immediately following his breakup with Jerry Lewis than at any time before or after that in his career, because he was angered by both critics%u2019 and friends%u2019 dire predictions of his career%u2019s demise; that everybody thought Lewis was the talent carrying Martin. Late in Dean%u2019s life, an interviewer ticked off some of his notable accomplishments, including a gold record that unseated The Beatles from the top of the charts, a diverse movie career, and a long-running television show. %u201cGuess I showed Jerry,%u201d he said. It was a revealing comment.
