His book, Psycho-Cybernetics, went on to reach over 30 million people, and lives on today, long after his death. These days, you can still buy the book. There is also an updated edition, The New Psycho-Cybernetics, that I co-authored. Dr. Maltz came forward with the reason why so many people earnestly attempt to improve their lives with positive thinking but never get anywhere. At the time, this was a radical and controversial concept. Today, just about every book, seminar, philosophy, or approach for helping people help themselves includes Dr. Maltz%u2019s discoveries.In brief, Dr. Maltz became convinced that no amount of conscious positive thinking or attempts at willpower and self-discipline can overcome a negative self-image. Another way to say this is that whenever resolution is incongruent with the self-image, the resolution fails. This explains sincere, earnest dieters who cannot stick to a weight loss regimen, why New Year%u2019s resolutions are never kept, why people procrastinate, and much more. It is the self-image that governs what a person %u201ccan%u201d and %u201ccan%u2019t%u201d do. So, for example, if deep down inside the self-image, a person sees himself as %u201cathletically impaired,%u201d clumsy, the last kid to ever get picked to play a game, he can take golf lessons, watch golf videos, use golf gadgets, and learn the technical aspect of a good golf swing, but his actual game will %u201csnap back%u201d to conform to the embedded
