CHAPTER 6 / MUST YOU INVENT? A POX ON CREATIVITY88 NO B.S. Guide to Succeeding in Business by Breaking All the RulesTurn on the tube. The Jetsons were The Flintstones transplanted to outer space. Star Wars was all the old Westerns transplanted to outer space. Today, Netflix and Amazon Prime are loaded to the gills with old and very old TV series and films a lot of people never saw, and at least half of its %u201cnew%u201d content comes from outright remakes of shows or movies already done two or three times. Old movies are turned into new, spin-off TV series like, as I write this, True Lies, American Idol, and AGT: America%u2019s Got Talent. These shows are all do-overs of classic talent competition programs swiping from the very dawn of black-and-white TV. The last truly original idea to come out of Hollywood may have been the big sign up on the hill overlooking the city. And that%u2019s okay. It%u2019s a business. About sales, ad revenue, viewer numbers, streaming subscription revenue. About profit. Trying to raise the likelihood of a success by greatly borrowing from prior successes is just good business. Why risk creating from scratch when there are so many fantastic models to copy from? This is the network or studio CEO%u2019s smart question, as he tries to prudently invest partners%u2019 and stockholders%u2019 capital. I suggest it as a very smart question for you, too.CONTRARIAN SUCCESS STRATEGYForget all about %u201ccreativity%u201d as it is commonly perceived and understood. If you feel like you haven%u2019t got a creative bone in your body, you can stop worrying about that, because it clearly does not matter. In fact, even creative folks need to fight creativity for creativity%u2019s sake and focus instead on doing what has already proven itself, a bit better. Never underestimate the value and power of the ordinary implemented with extraordinary zeal and diligence.
