PREFACE
Since beginning Ph.D. work in homiletics, the preaching of Jesus has been my desired focus.
It was, however, a seminar called “Proclamation and Culture,” led by Dr. Grant Lovejoy that
gave me an opportunity to begin researching and developing my interest in the methodology of
Jesus’ preaching in relationship to his contemporary culture. In that same seminar, I also
researched contemporary Korean preaching and its relationship to the contemporary Korean
culture. While studying these two subjects, I perceived that the methodology of Jesus’ preaching
methodology within Korean churches
Matters concerning form and style were drawn from A Manual for Writers of Term Papers,

Theses, and Dissertation, 6 edition, by Kate L. Turabian. Most of the Korean material was
obtained from the Joogang(central) Library of the Korea Baptist Theological
University/Seminary. The majority of the English materials consulted in this project were from A.
Webb Roberts Library of Southwestern Theological Seminary. Other materials were obtained
using the Interlibrary Loan. The dissertation was prepared on an IBM compatible computer using
Corel WordPerfect7.0 for Windows. It was printed on an hp LaserJet 1000 series printer.
There are so many individuals to whom I am indebted for the completion of this dissertation.
Limitations of time and space permit me to mention below only a few persons to whom I express
my grateful heart.
