by finding the number of cubes in each
drawing. 3 . Count the cubes. Write the number of cubes under each figure.
Are there any similarities in the answers?
There are nine cubes in each drawing. START
This exercise teaches students there can be
more than one way to solve a problem. 9 cubes 9 cubes
Have students compete against each other 9 cubes 9 cubes
in this exercise, which calls for counting the
cubes in each illustration. See who can
count the cubes the fastest to reach the
finish line.
Remind students they need to be aware of
the hidden cubes in the illustration.
When all the students have finished
counting the cubes, see how many got all
the illustrations right. Have students who
counted the cubes correctly explain how
they did it to those who counted incorrectly.

This lesson also teaches students that appearances are not
always what they seem. Some cubes are hidden in each drawing.
Review with students how to know when cubes are hidden from
view. Have students still having problems finding the hidden
cubes draw the figures layer by layer. This will make it easier to
identify hidden cubes. Have them draw the bottom layer first and
count the cubes. Next, do a separate drawing for the middle layer
and count the cubes. Repeat with the final layer. Then, add up
the cubes in each layer.
