Read the following paragraphs and the referent questions that go with them. The correct answers are Chapter 1
provided in bold.
The idea that subatomic particles could be broken down into components came from studies
in the 1930s of cosmic rays, or high energy protons, that come from outer space. When these
rays hit the nuclei of lead atoms, the nuclei broke into particles that were even smaller than
the protons and neutrons within the nuclei. Although these results presented major questions
to scientists concerning the composition of matter and the universe, there was really no easy
way to study these new subatomic particles. The only way to study them at all was to conduct
experiments on mountaintops where cosmic rays could be detected more easily.
The word them in the passage refers to
Correct Answer: particles
1. What grammatical role do the pronoun and the antecedent play in the passage?
As the United States expanded, telephones became necessary as a way for people to
communicate more quickly with each other over long distances. This was especially true in
the growing state of California. Relatively slow communications at the time risked isolating
California from the large population centers in the Eastern U.S. In 1860, the first attempt was
made to bridge this divide : a company set up a series of riders and horses called the Pony
Express to dispatch messages from Missouri to California. Each rider would ride about one
hundred miles with a bag of messages which he would hand over to the next rider, and so on,
all the way to California. Although it enabled messages to reach California in as little as seven
days, it was still a risky venture with no guarantees of how long it would take or whether the
messages would even get to their destination at all.
The phrase this divide in the passage refers to
Correct Answer: the communicative isolation between California and the Eastern U.S.
