Many people do not know that the arch’s shape is used for more than just artistic
purposes. The arch is an important construction and design element because it affords
support to the structure above it. Its semicircular construction spreads the vertical force
of the weight above it outward as it is compressed. This is significant because, while
materials such as iron, concrete, and stone are strong and durable, they still only resist
up to a certain level of tension or stress. By utilizing the concept of balance, an arch
holds together the compressive forces of the construction materials. Thus, configuring
a structure into an arched shape allows greater length and size in a construction.
However, there is a significant drawback to the arch, which is the outward direction of
forces at its base. Therefore, the base must be securely anchored in some way.
