[ PASSAGE B ]
Modern psychologists have studied the current correlation between people and
gadgets, especially in mobile communication. In our age of the Internet and rapid CHAPTER 1
technological breakthroughs, one negative byproduct has been the development
of the isolated person. Mobile communication has produced a type of unreal and
inorganic society where people have lost the ability to connect on personal levels.
Human interaction has become limited to the virtual kind rather than physical, severely
disrupting communicative advancement. Another negative effect can be witnessed
in a shift in language use, especially because of instant messaging and social media.
For example, many young people today replace the letter “s” with “z,” and it is rather
trendy to neglect basic rules of spelling, grammar, and syntax. Punctuation such as
the apostrophe is often disregarded, and auto-correct features eliminate the need to
memorize how to spell words. All in all, modern technology that was meant to connect
people has actually had the effect of separating them.
