Unit 1 Wedding Ceremonies

Reading Comprehension

Wedding ceremonies are joyful events, no matter what part of the world you
live in. But different cultures have very different ways of celebrating this special
day. In some African cultures, it is common for the bride to wash the groom‟s
feet. This usually takes place just outside their new home. When it is done, the
bride breaks an egg at the door of the house, officially making it their home as a
married couple. Halfway across the world, in Venezuela, the tradition is much
different. Ceremonies here call for the families of the bride and groom to
exchange 13 gold coins. They mean wealth and fortune. After the wedding, the
bride and groom leave the place very quietly. This is thought to bring good luck.
