C ranes are very well-known for standing on one leg. Why do they do
this? It may seem strange, but they stand on one leg to keep warm.
Feathers cover cranes from head to toe to keep their bodies warm in cold
weather. However, they don’t have feathers on their thin legs. Moreover, they
usually live in wet places like lakes and swamps, and the water can get really
cold. It will take away the heat from their legs. Thus, cranes stand with only
one leg in the water. This way, they don’t lose as much heat.
