There is a gumball machine that vends 4 gumballs for
$1. Think about the relationship between dollars and
the number of gumballs.
Complete the following table.

If dollars are represented by x, and the number of gumballs is represented by y,
the relationship between x and y can be written as y = 4x.
In y = 4x, once the value of x is set, the corresponding value of y is set as well.
The relationship in which one quantity depends uniquely on another quantity is
called a function.
For every value of x, there is exactly one value
for y. If there are two or more values of y,
y is not a function of x.
