Unit 1 Origin of Famous Brand Names
Listening Comprehension
Nike, Starbucks, and Baskin-Robbins. You probably know about these companies.
They are famous all over the world. But how did they get their names? There’s a story
behind each one.
For example, Baskin-Robbins is an ice cream shop. Its name is from its two owners
-- Burton Baskin and Irvine Robbins. Burton and Irvine both loved ice cream. So they
sold 31 flavors at each store. Why 31? That way, customers could try a new flavor
every day of the month!
Nike got its name in a different way. In fact, the company’s name wasn’t always
Nike. At first, its name was Blue Ribbon Sports. Later, the owners changed it to Nike.
They got the name from Greek mythology. Nike was the name of the goddess of
victory. Then, they made a new logo - the “swoosh.” A college student made it for
them in 1971. Nike only paid him $35 for it!
Starbucks also borrowed its name. It comes from the novel Moby Dick. In the book,
Starbuck works on a ship at sea. The Starbucks’ logo relates to the sea, as well. It is a
mermaid. This image is very old. It was on a piece of art.
