8 Joining Shapes

Basic Concepts Polyominoes

A polyomino is a shape that is formed by joining one or more congruent
squares side to side. A shape formed by joining two squares is called a
domino ( ), a shape formed by joining three squares is called a triomino
( , ), a shape formed by joining four squares is called a tetromino,

and a shape formed by joining five squares is called a pentomino.
When putting shapes together, sides of the same length should join, and no
part should be left unconnected. If one shape matches another shape after
being flipped or rotated, the two shapes are considered to be the same.

Example A shape that is formed by joining
five squares is called a pentomino.
Draw six other pentominoes that
are different from those on the
right.
