Use matches to make shapes as shown in the steps below. Find the number
of matches used in each step. Then find the number of matches needed to
make the nth shape.

Example Use the rule to find the number of matches that are needed to
make 10 regular pentagons.

Class Notes

We need matches to make one pentagon. To make another pentagon, we need

more matches.

To make 10 regular pentagons, we need to add 9 more pentagons to the first pentagon.

Therefore, we need (10 1) matches to make 10 regular pentagons.
