About 69 Bank Cormorant pairs bred at the island in 1995 0
1956 (Rand 1963), 41 pairs in 1975 (Cooper 1981) and 1996 0
33 pairs in 1989. There was then a rapid decrease and the 1997 0
colony became extinct in 1999 (Crawford et al. 2008). 1998 0

For much of the 20th century Cape Fur Seals were ab- 2004 0 0
sent from Penguin Island. A few were seen at the west of 2005 0 0
the island in 1974, where they started to breed in the 1980s 2006 0 0
(Oosthuizen and David 1988) and displaced cormorants 2007 0 0
from some breeding sites. Their expansion onto the flats 2008 0 0
and eastern areas was forestalled by regular disturbance 2009 0 0
programs (Seakamela et al. 2024). Seals have eaten sea- 2010 0 0
birds around Penguin Island at Lambert’s Bay and may 2011 0 0
have hastened the loss of its penguin colony (Crawford et 2012 0 0
